This article is very close and personal to me.
I write this as a letter to my fellow IMGs, as I am a foreign medical graduate. Excuse any typos and grammatical errors.
Dear Fellow IMGs,
As you all know, the world of USMLE steps and residency matches looks gloomy once you have low scores or visa restrictions. Many of my friends found themselves in this situation where they feel that they cannot progress as a medical doctor and practice medicine in the United states. Having a dream of being a medical doctor and becoming one , it feels as if your identity is your profession. Then when so-called reality hits you, you feel as if that identity is being stolen from you and there is an immense emotional/social toll.
I had numerous conversations with my IMG friends who were in these situations, and who feel very incapacitated after all the hard work and knowledge they have gained through medical school.
I want to give not just hope but confidence in looking at careers which are not alternative any more but there are mainstream now, where you will be satisfied professionally and financially.
Career paths that you have a choice to make are (In the order of most IMGs choice)
Drug safety or pharmacovigilance
Medical affairs
Clinical operations
Clinical research
Clinical trial Management
Clinical data management
To evaluate each of the above choices, will be in another upcoming blog post.
I strongly recommend to take Option 1 – DRUG SAFETY OR PHARMACOVIGILANCE.
Compensation, work-life balance, appreciation, peer collaboration, teamwork, stability, career growth, and cause bigger than themselves, etc are some of the parameters that make drug safety a successful and lucrative career.
